Here is an Eye Opener: Halloween Costumes for Girls
October 29, 2007
Newsweek ran an article called, “Eye Candy,” today on MSN.com.
Little girls’ Halloween costumes are looking more like they were designed by Victoria’s Secret every year. Are we prudes or is this practically kiddie porn?
I too have noticed the amount of increasingly provocative Halloween costumes being created for young girls. As a mother of several daughters, I can’t help but be alarmed by this trend. Costumes for girls labeled with the names of: Shipwrecked Pirate, Wayward Witch, Child’s Chamber Maid Costume and Miss-Behaved. Are you not horrified? Nothing is scarier to me!
Unfortunately, I cannot solely blame the costume companies for what is happening now.
Demand is what drives up the supply for these goods.
As parents we need to think about what we are doing to support this shocking trend. You can call me a prude, but in my opinion, children dressed with pink chains around their wrists, or showing cleavage, is simply tragic.

-I am with ya sista! Seriously the entire little girls department walmart is turning into “porn for pedophiles.”
That said, I’m retiring my daughters skirt she’s wearing after today. It was knee length when I bought it for her 4 months ago. She’s grown so much that today its barely covering her butt. – Jen from http://www.mommywhatsfordinner.blogspot.com
-I totally agree! I was shocked and appalled to see sexy costumes in Toddler sizes while shopping this year! Who is buying this stuff for their kids to wear?–as you point out, there is obviously a demand for such garbage. – SAHMmy from http://www.sahmmysays.blogspot.com

I very much agree with you about costumes for girls and young women! This is why I make my own costumes, or failing that, alter the costumes I find (should I feel them unacceptable) prior to letting they see the light of day. The other problem with those costumes is the need for extra clothing underneath them due to it being too cold (in my area) to go out wearing them as is.
I think it is in part a sample of where society is headed in that parents are allowing their children to wear these costumes even at such a young age.

Thanks for your comment Saffity! I encourage my kids to get creative with their costumes. We have a lot of “stuff” like capes, leotards, and wigs that we work with to make original and memorable costumes.
That’s half the fun for us on Halloween! I believe we really need to stop thinking we need to keep buying new things all the time and use and re-use what we already have.
